David Paul Watson (RIP), also known as “Sam the Skunkman,” passed away on January 28, 2025.

On this sad day, this is what we would like to say to David Watson:

“I am grateful to possess your original Skunk #1. Your work is renowned through thousands of legendary strains. I wish more people understood that there are hundreds of phenotypes originating from Skunk #1, which have been carried into so many of today’s strains.”

A pioneer in cannabis botany and genetics, he played a key role in shaping the modern cannabis industry.

In the 1980s, David and his partner Diana moved to Amsterdam, where cannabis laws were more favorable. Their experiences there became a turning point in their lives. David had already traveled extensively along the “Hippie Trail,” collecting landrace cannabis seeds from Morocco to Thailand and frequently returning to India and Southeast Asia in search of unique genetics. His efforts revolutionized home cannabis cultivation and laid the foundation for many of today’s most popular strains.

A passionate researcher, David dedicated his life to understanding cannabis.

David’s direct and empirical approach to science sometimes ruffled feathers, but those who knew him appreciated his honesty and dedication. He attended international conferences, freely shared his knowledge, and never hesitated to challenge authority in the pursuit of scientific progress.

His curiosity, travels, and unwavering commitment to cannabis botany advanced the field tremendously. His legacy continues to inspire future generations, and in his memory, the writer asks for a “moment of highness.”

David Watson’s legacy is undeniable. His work with cannabis genetics, especially in preserving and developing landrace strains, shaped the modern industry. His influence can be seen in many of today’s most popular varieties, and his commitment to science pushed cannabis research forward in ways few others have. Do you have a personal connection to his work, or are you just inspired by his contributions?

What is Skunk #1?

Skunk #1 is a legendary hybrid strain (65% Indica, 35% Sativa) bred by David Watson (Sam the Skunkman) in the 1970s. It laid the foundation for many modern cannabis hybrids. Its genetics come from Afghani (stability & resin), Acapulco Gold (uplifting effects), and Colombian Gold (potency & energy).
